FROM THE TEMPLE TRADITION

The legend of Sankara Variyar

One of Pallikunnu’s legends tells of Sankara Variyar, a temple attendant, and a dream of the Goddess.

In the story, Mookambika appears to him at night and tells him of a fruit in the northern temple kitchen.

She asks him to take it and eat it.

Sankara Variyar follows the instruction and puts the peel in a drainage channel.

The account says that knowledge and poetic ability then awaken in him through the Goddess’s grace.

He becomes known as Sankara Kavi and composes verses in praise of the Mother.

A related account tells of a priest who eats the discarded peel and receives poetic ability, becoming known as Thola Kavi.

For devotees, this legend expresses the hope that learning and creative ability may flourish in an ordinary life. It is a story of faith, rather than a verified account of these events.

FROM THE TEMPLE TRADITION

Cherusseri in local memory

Local tradition also connects Pallikunnu with the Malayalam poet Cherusseri Namboothiri.

It holds that he once served as a priest at the temple.

This connection is preserved here as a local belief; the material supplied for the website does not establish it through documentary evidence.

Alongside the stories of Sankara Kavi and Thola Kavi, it reflects the place of poetry and creative expression in the temple’s Saraswati tradition.

These remembered connections give devotees a way to relate their own learning and creative work to worship.
